Luis Mastromatteo is a plastic artist born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1934 and been in Venezuela from 1975. It studied drawing and painting in the National School of Beautiful Arts of Montevideo, made complementary studies of drawing and acceded by aid of opposition to an educational position in the average education from its country to the twenty-three years.
The twenty years that dedicated to education had an investigation character and, in relation to the requirements and necessities of the students could be developing the self-criticism, a fundamental tool for their later artistic unfolding in the mature age. This collection of seventy masks that we presented/displayed to them corresponds to a large extent to the last years, summarize or better obtained in this sort, for that reason the aspiration of the artist in relation to the final destiny of this collection, is that it is integrated to the permanent of some museum or exposed sample of traveling form so that they can be appreciated by great amount of public.
As it is possible to be appreciated in the samples, one is a conception different from most traditional. The mask from its origins are been associate to rituals of old cultures and some that still subsist in diverse places of the world. Made by craftsmen or popular artists and, in spite of the great variety of forms, the careful one finished and all the creative contribution, did not extend as artistic works and their authors have been in the anonymity.
